The Sterling View Story

Sterling View Cooperative Community, Inc., is a 55 and over community that was established in 1987 and has grown to a 113-site, resident-owned manufactured home community.

But that transition didn’t happen overnight.

We formed the Sterling View Cooperative and started on the path to resident-ownership in 2021. That’s when, with the help of Cooperative Development Institute and ROC USA, LLC, we purchased and took control of our community on April 2, 2021.

Now, the resident-owned community (ROC) is not only a successful business, but also a thriving neighborhood. The process of the resident-owned community buying the land beneath our neighborhood brought this community closer together.

Not only do we know far more of our neighbors than ever before, but we look out for one another, too. And with no outside landlord to report to, we’re the envy of other nearby manufactured home communities.

Our Member households elect our Board of Directors, which works with a property management firm and also appoints various volunteer committees to help with special projects, celebrations, community improvements and more.

The Board submits a budget every year, and the entire Membership votes on it and any changes to the rent before the budget becomes official. We’re running the business that is our community on our terms, by our rules, for the betterment of ourselves and our neighbors.

Sterling View is a well-established 55 and over community in Hyde Park, Vt. Our neighborhood offers a three-mile loop for walking and bike riding with paved driveways and roads and beautiful trees and gardens. Our community center hosts family parties, a weekly coffe klatch, exercise and quilting groups for our members.

We have an active social club that organizes trips, hosts potluck and holiday dinners and fund raises in the summer and winter. We have easy access to restaurants, shopping, museums, grocery stores and public transportation. We can get to downtown Hyde Park in five minutes where we enjoy beautiful views of the Lamoille River and access to the Lamoille Rail Trail Valley. Sterling View is an ideal spot for adventure lovers with skiing, hiking and snowmobiling trails nearby.

Since we voted to become a resident-owned community, we have worked hard to improve our community. We have put up new signs and fencing, planted flowers and trimmed trees. We strive to keep our community looking beautiful and we pride ourselves in keeping our community strong and united.

Our social committee holds events throughout the year, which sometimes includes the chance for our members to win prizes. It’s a great way to strengthen our community and meet new Members. And everyone always has fun!
